Sin Kay. Jo Sef Sin Kay. Was this a name? Was this the man’s name? Sengbe did not understand this strange new language and tried to speak his Mende words but the man held up his hand in front of him and closed his eyes to signal that Sengbe stop. The man repeated the strange words one more time and then left.

Sengbe and the others were allowed to rest for another week. They were fed regularly and given oil to rub into their skin. Their wounds healed and they were able to get stronger. They were marched to a big village and then placed in a big pen with a dirt floor surrounded by a fence on all four sides. It was a stockade, Sengbe realized, like the ones they kept their animals in at home.

While in the stockade, men came by and looked at them all. They looked at their teeth and eyes and felt the muscles in their arms and legs. They looked at the women and the children, too. Sengbe saw one man pointing at him and then giving the man Sengbe knew only as Sin Kay some coins and papers. Was he being sold, Sengbe wondered?
